How to Setup Wordpress Analytics Event Tracking - 15 Minutes

Tutorial #2: How to Setup WordPress Analytics Event Tracking

This tutorial shows you how to setup WordPress Analytics Event Tracking using the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin. You’ll learn how to select your global settings and how long you’ll retain tracked events and inactive users in your WordPress database before deleting them. This tutorial also gives you an overview of all your WordPress analytics event tracking choices, from page reads, skims, and skips, to MP3 and YouTube video tracking, and more.

Step #1: Go to the Vervenia Admin Page and Select the “Tracking” Tab

Before we show you how to set up your WordPress Analytics Event Tracking, you must install the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin for WordPress. After starting your FREE 30-Day Trial, you’ll download the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin in Zip file and complete Tutorial #1: How to Integrate Google Analytics With WordPress. Once this is done, click the “Vervenia Admin” button in the upper right-hand corner of your plugins page, and then select the “Tracking” tab to find the settings in this tutorial…

Step #2: Choose Your Event Tracking Scope

There are two options for this setting. The first option (Post/Page Settings Override Global Settings) allows you to change the event tracking for a specific event at the page or post level. For example, if you check the option to track all page visits (see step seven below), you can still choose to turn page visit tracking off for a specific page. Likewise, if you UNCHECK the option to track all page visits (see Step #7 below), you can still choose to turn page visit tracking ON for a specific page. This is the most flexible setting and therefore also the default setting.

The second option (Global Settings Override Page/Post Settings) allows you to turn ALL event tracking on or off for a specific event (see Step #7 below). For example, if you select this option AND check the option to track all page visits (see step seven below), the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will automatically track all page visits on your website. Likewise, if you UNCHECK the option to track all page visits (see Step #7 below), the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will turn off all page tracking on your website.

Step #3: Choose Your Event Log History

This setting determines how long logged events will remain in your WordPress database. For example, if you select the “5 Years” option, WordPress will periodically sweep your database and delete all tracked events that are older than 5 years. Likewise, if you select the “1 Year” option, the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will only store events for one year, and any stored events older than one year will be deleted. While choosing this setting, keep in mind that the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin can display Dynamic WordPress Content to your users based on their past actions. So, if you choose to have all user events deleted after one year, your users will only see your Dynamic Content based on actions they’ve taken over the past year.

Step #4: Choose Your Inactive User History

This setting determines how long inactive visitors will remain in your WordPress database. For example, if you select the “5 Years” option, WordPress will periodically sweep your database and delete any visitors who have not been back to your website for 5 years. Likewise, if you select the “1 Year” option, the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will only store inactive visitors for one year, and any inactive visitors older than one year will be deleted. While choosing this setting, keep in mind that the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will not delete registered users from your WordPress database.

Step #5: Choose Your Scroll Threshold

This setting determines how far down the page (or post) your visitors will need to scroll before the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin tracks that event as a page read, skim, or skip. For example, if you select the “50%” option here, the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will log a page read, skim, or skip event after your visitor has scrolled halfway down your page or post. The Vervenia Event Tracking Feature uses a custom algorithm to distinguish between page reads, skims, or skips, based on the speed of the scroll and the word count of the page or post.

Step #6: Choose Your YouTube and MP3 Tracking Percentages

This setting determines at which intervals the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will log a YouTube Progress or MP3 Progress event. For example, if you select only the “50%, 100%” option here, the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin will track MP3 and YouTube Video Progress BOTH when your visitor reaches the 50% mark AND the 100% mark of a YouTube video or an MP3. Likewise, selecting the “25%, 50%, 75%, 100%” option will track an MP3 or YouTube Video Progress event at ALL of the 25% mark, the 50% mark, the 75% mark, and the 100% mark.

These settings determine which events will be automatically tracked by the Vervenia Marketing Automation Plugin. Please see Step #2 in this tutorial for details on how to make these event settings global, or customizable at the page/post level.
